Visit our town

Santa Susanna is a town with origins dating back to the 12th century, when the Vall d'Alfata was populated by peasants who worked the fields of vines and cereals. The watchtowers have passed down from Medieval times, the Santa Susanna Chapel and old country houses, some still inhabited and, like Can Rosich, prepared for rural tourism. All of the buildings, which are an important part of our artistic and historical heritage, maintain the value of the history in their walls.

Emblematic places of Santa Susanna

WATCHTOWERS
Can Ratés

The ancient tower shelter of Can Ratés (the former mas Poch) is cylindrical with merlons of blind stonework. It is built against the country house right on the vortex of an angle created for the gallery with porches, the area formerly the stables and the loft on the upper floor. This layout allows a large free space to be left in the centre where there was the threshing floor. The topography then allowed access to the lake on a lower floor by means of the courtyard staircase. The whole unit with the lake, which is now a swimming pool, and the rooms and former stables are municipal equipment.

Mas Galter

The Mas Galter tower has a cylindrical base and is cut on it upper part. It is on carrer d'en Bou street, next to plaça Lola Anglada and parc d'en Colomer. Currently, it belongs to the Pi family.

Can Bonet d'Avall

The can Bonet d'Avall tower, with a square base, was most likely built in the late 15th century. With the improvement work in 1805, it was lined and painted ochre colour and part of the top was modified. Now it looks like more a tower built four centuries later; it is similar to a 19th century building.

Plan of the tower

The tower plan follows the cylindrical model, but differs from others in the diameter – this is larger -, and the location: it is the one closest to the sea. It currently houses the Renfe railway ticket offices. The platforms are at the foot of the tower, which perfectly illustrates the blend of modernity and tradition we have mentioned. The station also guarantees the preservation of this historical tower and makes it very easy to visit.

The Montagut Tower

The Montagut tower, like the Can Bonet tower, has a quadrangular base and is not restored.

CHURCH
Parish Church

Santa Susanna parish church is a simple building built in the post-war by all the townspeople, with their own personal work, unpaid. We highlight the paintings in the presbytery done by Aurelio Crosiet, a disciple of Josep Maria Sert, an expert in decorating large spaces by painting on a canvas with a thin lining of gold. The central painting is an allegory to the Eucharist: to the right is the martyrdom of Santa Susanna, and the painting to the left is a fantastic vision of her arrival in heaven. The dome draws out a sky of clouds with an evangelist at each corner.

THE CHAPELS
Sant Isidre Chapel

Affected by the construction of the Maresme motorway, it had to be demolished and rebuilt a few metres from the old site. Now it is in the Plaça de Llillota. A modern structure, but preserving the charm of being located in a natural place of great beauty, it is ideal for strolling and resting. It is precisely here, year after year, where the brotherhood dinner is held for the feast of Sant Isidre, on 15th May, although the feast itself is celebrated the following Sunday.

Sant Crist Chapel

The well-known Sant Crist chapel is a small oratory located on a crossroads where travellers bade farewell to the saint, to successfully go on their way. Still today we see candles lit, an obvious sign of the devotion professed there. Specifically, it is on the ‘camí del mig’, surrounded by the crops of the Santa Susanna plain.

The Ancient Chapel of Santa Susanna

The ancient chapel of Santa Susanna is the one that gives the town its name. It is not an isolated building like the previous one, but lies against another building. A stone shield reminds us of the one at Can Ratés, which means that the country house and the chapel belonged to the same family. In fact, the chapel lies between can Ratés and can Bonet, two historical buildings of Santa Susanna. The chapel has been restored by its owners.

Mare de Déu de Gràcia hermitage

Another building we highlight is the chapel of Mare de Déu de Gràcia, which is in the municipal area of Santa Susanna, even though it belongs to the parish of Pineda. Close to the two towns, the people from both towns usually go there on foot, either to show their devotion to the Mother of God or to discover the places along the route through the forests of the area. Its name is closely related to our town and to celebrate it, the Esbart Dansaire and the Colla de Geganters i Grallers baptise the giants procession with the name of Gracieta. Likewise, in memory of the chapel of Sant Isidre and of Santa Susanna, the giants baptise these with the names of Sidru and Susanna and the parish of Santa Susanna also gave the new church bells the names of Susanna and Maria Gràcia, to also choose two referents completely identified with the town.

PARKS
Parc de la Font del Boter

Its calmness, beautiful environment and fresh water turn it into an ideal place to walk or to spend the whole day. There is a picnic area and a camp site (ask for permission at the Town Hall). From the Font del Boter fountain you can get fresh water from an old mine.

Parc d’en Colomer

It is a green area ideal for relaxing. It has an area for children with swings.

Molí d’en Jordà (Molí d’en Rufo)

This old flour mill, from the late 17th century and early 18th century, got the water from Santa Susanna's brook. There are still some walls from the old mill: an aqueduct, with two arches, which took the water to the mill.
