The Maresme Regional Council has set up the Attention Centre for Domestic Pets of the Maresme, located in Argentona. The main job of this centre is to collect and receive pets that have been abandoned, lost or domestic animals out in the wild in the area.

In the time that the animals are in the facilities, a team of professionals take care of them until they are recovered, given away or sacrificed. They also capture dogs and cats living in the wild with remote immobilisation methods. They are all entered in a computerised register accessible to the public so that their owners might be found and their adoption might be promoted. Before giving them in adoption, the vets check their state of health, vaccinate them, identify them and sterilise them. They also deal with advising on the adoption profiles.

From Santa Susanna, an animal collection service may be requested by calling the local police (Tel. 680 66 16 61), which contacts the centre in Argentona.

The Maresme regional pound also collaborates with the town halls to promote actions to protect the animals, by nurturing responsibility and civil conduct of the citizens in the defence, preservation and ownership of pets. Likewise, it also generates activities of collaboration in social campaigns, in order to enhance the reinsertion of young people and adults with social problems, and to collaborate with the mentally and psychically disabled.

This service is financed by Barcelona and Maresme Regional Councils, and the town halls pay for part of the service, depending on the number of inhabitants and the extension of the town. Although the centre serves the whole of the Maresme region, for the moment 19 municipalities have adhered, and others are expected to come in soon.
